Coalition for a Livable Lexington: Affordable Housing 101

What is Affordable Housing? How is it different than housing affordability or “attainable housing”? Why do we need all types of housing options in Lexington? What are the hurdles to developing more affordable & attainable housing for all Lexingtonians? Join the Coalition for a Livable Lexington at The Lyric Theatre on Tuesday, April 5, 5:30-7:30pm to hear how we approach these critical challenges facing our community and how you can help.

We will hear from coalition members who are building Affordable housing and those who are advocating for more attainable and accessible housing for all income levels. We will also hear from affordable housing developers on the benefits and challenges of building these types of homes.

Joshua T. Fain, Esq., Executive Director, Lexington Community Land Trust

Josh Fain joined Lexington Community Land Trust as the Executive Director in December of 2020. He holds a B.A. in Accounting from Transylvania University and a J.D. from University of Kentucky College of Law. Josh previously worked for Legal Aid of the Bluegrass as a staff attorney then as the Pro Bono Coordinator. His practice at Legal Aid focused primarily on foreclosure defense, landlord/tenant law, unemployment, and other consumer related issues. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Lexington Fair Housing Council and is a member of the Kentucky Fair Housing Task Force and the Central Kentucky Housing and Homelessness Initiative. Brittany Roethemeier, J.D., Executive Director, Fayette Alliance

Brittany M. Roethemeier, J.D., joined Fayette Alliance as Executive Director in March 2019 after practicing real estate law at McBrayer PLLC since 2011, where she was named a “Super Lawyer-Rising Star in Real Estate” in 2017, 2018, and 2019. A passion for her community and a desire to ensure that Lexington continues to be an extraordinary place to live, work and play for all its community members brought her to Fayette Alliance, where she is committed to its vital mission to sustainably and equitably grow our city and promote our farms. She has served as a volunteer with numerous non-profit organizations, including on the Board of Directors of Step by Step, Transylvania University Young Alumni Council, Friends of the Bluegrass Land Conservancy, Leadership Lexington Alumni Association and Youth Program Steering Committees, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and is a graduate of the Leadership Lexington Class of 2014-15. Originally from Union, Kentucky, Brittany is a graduate of Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky College of Law, and lives in Lexington with her husband Dean and rescue dog Henry.

Johan Graham, President, AU Associates, Inc.

Johan is the President and Owner of AU Associates, Inc. His primary responsibilities revolve around structuring, underwriting, syndicating, repositioning, and managing AU’’s current and future portfolio of LIHTC projects while expanding AU’s regional footprint. Johan has been involved in affordable housing development finance and construction for over 20 years and is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Masters in Regional Planning with a focus on Affordable Housing, Real Estate, and Community Development. He has been responsible for over $250 million in Low-Income Housing and Historic Tax Credit equity investments totaling over 2,000 units and, as a developer, has delivered over thirty 8609s to his investors and lenders. Beargrass is currently developing a commercial mixed-use area with affordable apartments off of Citation Blvd. in Lexington.

James Duffy, Developer & Owner, Beargrass Development

James is a Developer and Owner of Beargrass Development, LLC based out of Louisville, KY. James has vest experience developing multifamily housing utilizing 9% and 4% Low Income Housing Tax Credits as well as Federal and State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits. To date, James has developed and managed projects producing 980 units totaling $175.53MM in development costs generating $8.91MM in Low Income Housing Tax Credits, $12.93MM in Federal Historic Rehabilitation Credits, and $5.51MM in State Historic Rehabilitation Credits. James was an Accountant & Project Manager for Oracle Design Group, Inc. where he managed development and construction services of multi-family and single-family housing. Before that, he worked in public accounting in both tax and assurance services. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Kentucky and received a double major, with honors, in Accounting & History. In his spare time, you can find James renovating historic homes, playing golf, or enjoying the outdoors.
